33.7. The Retail Terminal

When the terminal interface opens, you can begin processing transactions by scanning barcodes or manually adding items from the list on the right (the bar code scanner is frequently faster and is recommended). To manually add items without the use of a barcode scanner, just begin typing a portion of the item name in the "Find Item" box to quickly filter the list of retail items.

You can also optionally associate transactions with specific guests or combine a retail transaction with an existing invoice (helpful for lodging guests who may want to combine purchases). Since people often do not know their invoice number, it is best to start by selecting the customer. Once you select the customer, the invoice list will be populated with available invoices for that customer, making it easier to add the transaction to an existing invoice.

In the bottom right are the actions associated with the transaction. If a guest is going to pay by card, swipe the card through your card reader and a new action will appear to charge the swiped card. Otherwise, you can select "Pay..." button to enter a credit card, check or gift certificate payment manually without using a credit card swiper (just like the payments are processed for regular invoices). Or if the guest is going to pay with cash, click the "Pay Total by Cash" option.

Note that if you click "Pay Total by Cash" or using one of the credit card transactions, Arctic will close the whole transaction in a single step. This can be very efficient, but it also requires confirming that all needed items and changes have been made to the transaction before clicking the action button.

Customers With Saved Cards

If the transaction is associated with a specific customer and that customer has saved credit cards in Arctic, those cards will also appear as payment options as well. When selected, you will be able to process payments to the saved cards quickly and efficiently without the need to swipe the card or enter it manually.
